A stoma specialist, also known as an enterostomal therapist or ostomy nurse, is a highly trained healthcare professional specializing in the care and management of patients with stomas. A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen that allows for the diversion of urine or feces when normal bowel or bladder function is compromised due to conditions such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or trauma.
Stoma specialists play a critical role in assisting patients before, during, and after stoma surgery. They provide education and support to help patients and their families understand the surgical procedure, adjust to life with a stoma, and learn proper stoma care techniques. This includes guidance on selecting and fitting ostomy appliances, managing peristomal skin complications, and addressing psychosocial concerns related to body image and lifestyle changes.
In addition to patient care, stoma specialists collaborate with healthcare teams to develop individualized care plans, participate in stoma clinics, and conduct research to advance stoma care practices. They may also provide ongoing support and follow-up care to ensure optimal stoma function, patient comfort, and quality of life.
