Varicose vein surgery, also known as varicose vein stripping or ligation, is a surgical procedure performed to treat varicose veins, which are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear in the legs and feet. Varicose veins develop when the valves within the veins weaken or fail, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell.
During varicose vein surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions in the affected area and removes or seals off the damaged vein segments. This can be done using various techniques, including vein ligation (tying off the vein), vein stripping (removing the affected vein), or vein ablation (destroying the vein with heat or laser energy).
Varicose vein surgery may be recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as pain, swelling, heaviness, or discomfort associated with varicose veins, or for cosmetic reasons if the veins are unsightly or cause self-consciousness.
With advancements in surgical techniques, many varicose vein surgeries can now be performed using minimally invasive methods such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). These approaches typically result in faster recovery times, less postoperative pain, and smaller incisions compared to traditional open surgery.
